Television
Frontline
-- The best hour on television, and the best documentaries produced
today. Frontline is this sites most recommended source for documentary
films, it does not disappoint. Frontline is a weekly one-hour series
that airs on the Public Broadcasting System, and that has, over the past
two decades, provided over 300 long-form documentaries on various
subjects, including politics, society, and personal stories. Many of
the best documentaries ever made have come from Frontline. Frontline is
also innovative when it comes to its resources on the web. When you go
to their site you are provided with basic information on the programs,
but each program has its own unique site, that can be accessed from the
main page. Frontline in recent years has taken the step of showing a
icon in the documentaries when more information on a particular subject
can be accessed on the web. Their sites are well designed and provide
even more valuable information on their film subjects, than is possible
in its one-hour format.
NOVA -- NOVA, a
science focused documentary series on PBS, represents how documentary
programs can be important to well being of a society. In a era where
belief in the paranormal is strong and growing, NOVA stands as a program
that promotes the scientific method, and solves the unexplained by
searching for truth. Don't let the thoughts of high school science
classrooms turn you off to this series, because NOVA feels more like an
adventure then any classroom lecture. Whether it is addressing how the
pyramids where made, obscure mathematical formulas, or the extinction of
the dinosaurs, NOVA makes the subjects interesting, and yes, they make
science interesting.
Schedule. Past
film sites listed by
title
and subject.
P.O.V. --
A summer series on PBS, P.O.V. shows documentaries that are produced
entirely independently, and not within the PBS system. This distinction
allows for a considerable number of diverse films to appear on PBS that
would otherwise be unlikely to find a audience on PBS or any other
national audience broadcast. P.O.V. has shown some of the best
theatrical documentaries, such as Roger & Me and Hearts of
Darkness, but it primarily shows documentaries from independent
filmmakers that would otherwise not have the ability to get their films
to a audience. Many of the films are very personal in their focus, but
most of the films will appeal to any fan of documentaries. P.O.V. also
has very interactive web site, and when the films are showing in the
summer season, discussion groups, among other features are offered over
the web. Filmmakers with a finished film should consider submitting it.
Film Submission Information
The American Experience -- Since its debut in 1988, The American Experience, a PBS historical
documentary series, has shown the stories of the people and events that
have shaped this country. With its thirteenth season beginning in
October, the series has produced over 100 programs and garnered every
major broadcast award. The series' web site is most effective in
complimenting and extending the program's themes, by having web sites
extensive web sites that deal with each program. These web sites are
indexed, and can be accessed
Alphabetically,
Chronologically, or
Thematically.
The Sundance Channel
-- A channel devoted to the spirit of the film festival of the same
name; The Sundance Channel is the TV network of independent film in the
U.S.. The Sundance Channel is part of the Showtime networks, and is
available on all major satellite providers. Sundance provides a number
of great films that are unlikely to be seen on other channels and this
included documentary films. Every Monday night they premiere a new
documentary film. If you live in a area with limited access to
independent films, this Channel can be your belated life-line to the
world of documentary films. Highly recommend for all type of films
including docs.
The Independent Film Channel -- IFC shows a variety of
independent films, but has a limited library on which to draw. It shows
several documentary films a month, but is better at providing original
programming that provides information on the independent film industry.
Since the channel is often bundled with other stations in the general
programming packages, if you happen to receive it, enjoy.
PBS -- Beyond its documentary series, the Public
Broadcasting System can be counted on to provide a considerable number
of additional documentaries each year. Examples include Ken Burn's
Civil War, Nerds 2.0.1, and a variety of other documentaries that
usually deal with subjects that are more historical than contemporary.
Documentary Films .Net provides scheduling information on these programs
in our News page.
Cinemax - The Cinemax Reel Life series
is an eclectic showcase of distinctive, independent documentaries with a
wide range of subject matter and styles. They present many award
winning independent films for the first time on television, as well as
providing funding for their own original productions.
The
Documentary Channel -- This site is big on promises, but
limited in content. It appears that they plan to role out a channel in
the second quarter of 2000 devoted entirely to showing documentary films
uncut, but the details are few. No information is provided as to what
cable stations or satellite services would carry the channel. If this
channel can succeed it would undoubtedly be an excellent chance for all
documentary fans to finally have access to documentaries that have
previously been unavailable or out of print. Any information will be
provided as soon as we receive it.
The History
Channel -- Historical documentaries |

Proposal to Mark Cuban for Mobile Media HDTV
Uplink / Production Services at Film Festivals Bob Nagy, on
the scene at the Hot Springs this week is researching the viability of a
Mobile Media Translation Service for Film Festivals. We're gathering ideas for a business proposal to pitch to Mark
Cuban ( http://blogmaverick.com
) . . . in fact this is for his eyes only. This is not a public url,
it is not linked from anywhere that we know about.
Our proposal for Mark is to have a booth at
each film festival along with a mobile production unit capable of converting mini dv,
dvd and other formats to HDTV format for broadcast over HDTV networks.
Our group of
videographers and technicians already has experience in running satellite tv
uplink trucks and in video editing and production as well as website design
and webcasting. The team consists of Bob Nagy and Paul Walhus plus others to be named in a
future organizational document.
Our target customers would be the
participants in the many film festivals around the country that are
described below and in the sidebars of this document. If there is
interest in this, we will unveil a full business plan and business strategy
document.
Feedback and Comments:
"I have been told by their SR VP (Cuban folks) that
they will do a co-production w/ their trucks facility, etc...but they only
schedule it during down time outside of
basketball season.
...you'd still need to raise enough cash from investors to cover the hard
cost out of pocket plus a production fee for putting it all together.. let
me
know when you have your site up.
It sounds interesting. Is there any money in transferring film to HD?
Would you XFER film trailers on site to compile the show?
Wouldn't that be done by a colorist @ a digital film house like Video Post?
Would you uplink "live" to/from a set or location? Why?
Let's explore! I'd like to know about your team. I used to work in Austin
at 501 Studios after UT Film/TV. - Bob S
Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival -
a case study
The Hot
Springs Documentary Film Festival began in 1992, launched by a small group
of arts activists in Hot Springs. That year, ten Academy Award nominated
documentary films were screened to the public free of charge. Veteran actor
James Whitmore lent his presence to this first event and spoke of a bright
future: "This (Hot Springs) could be the documentary capital of the world."
Encouraged
by the enthusiastic response to the fledgling effort, the festival grew in
1993 to screen a total of 44 films. A gala fundraising event featured actor
James Earl Jones, who proclaimed, "I see the 1990's as holding the promise
of an unparalleled era of popularity for nonfiction film and video, with the
Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival as one of the genre's most important
venues."
An audience
of more than 5,000 attended the 1994 Festival. Fourteen documentary
filmmakers attended with dozens of films screening. The filmmakers met with
audiences and participated in post-film discussions, a rare occurrence at
most other festivals but one that has helped establish a tradition of
filmmaker participation in the Festival. This tradition is what makes HSDFF
a unique venue and is what returning audiences and filmmakers cite most in
their praise of the Festival.
In 1996,
the Festival acquired a permanent home with the two-screen Malco Theater
property. This encouraged the HSDFI board to begin planning a year-round
slate of activities and to formally approve a new direction, signaled in the
name change to the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute. This expanded
sense of mission prompted the first significant non-festival activity, the
Library of Congress Film Preservation Tour which occured in 1997. Film
director Arthur Hiller, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences, attended and added his voice to the chorus of those proclaiming
the great potential of the Institute. Celebrity guests have been
consistently supportive as well: Geraldine Chaplin, Eleanor Coppola, Alan
Ginsberg, Connie Stevens, Tippi Hedren, and Brenda Vaccaro have all voiced
their praise and support.
The 1997
Festival enjoyed the benefits of a major first-time grant from the Arkansas
Humanities Council and an extensive promotional partnership with AETN
(Arkansas Educational Television Network). These initiatives transformed the
Festival from a "Hot Springs event" into an "Arkansas event." Furthermore, a
demographic profile of attendees revealed the importance of the Festival as
an educational as well as cultural institution, as a large percentage of
attendees were college faculty, secondary teachers, and students. These
numbers grow annually.
The period
since 1997 has been marked by a number of major breakthroughs in resource
development, including substantial grants from the Academy of Motion
Pictures, Arts and Sciences, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Arkansas Arts
Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. The growth of Festival
audiences, educational initiatives, prestige, and the acquisition of the
Malco Theatre has led to the broadening of the Festival into an
internationally acclaimed year-round Institute that attracts over 30,000+
audience members and filmmakers.
In 2003,
the International Documentary Association (IDA), in association with the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, selected the Hot Springs
Documentary Film Institute as one of four national Academy Award qualifying
sites. The IDA selected 18 outstanding documentaries to screen during this
first year of an effort to promote films and filmmakers eligible for Oscar
consideration and to provide commercial theater runs for the documentary
genre.
The Hot
Springs Documentary Film Institute was also the first site to be selected as
part of the Oscar qualifying tour for 2004. In September, we will serve as a
venue for the IDA InFact Tour for documentaries deemed “possible contenders”
for Academy Awards. Our working relationship with IDA has been developed
through Sandra Ruch, the Executive Director of IDA, who generously gives her
time and energy to serve at our Film Festival as an advisor on a panel that
reviews and critiques rough-cuts and works from upcoming filmmakers. We are
pleased that some of those past beginning documentarians have gone on to
submit completed/finished works to our Film Festival.
Last year’s
Film Festival opened with a rough cut of Harry Thomason’s The Hunting of the
President. Recently the finished film had a world premiere in Little Rock,
with several of the persons involved in the Clinton Presidency in
attendance. The next night saw the New York City premiere attended by many
notables, including former President Clinton.
At the 2003
Film Festival HSDFI was honored with the presence of Ken Burns, who
graciously accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker at our annual
Gala and to bring his new documentary, “Horatio’s Drive: America’s First
Road Trip,” for it’s first regional theatrical screening. With his
well-known films such as the “Civil War” and “Baseball” series, Burns is one
of the world’s foremost documentarians. “Burns has made unparalleled
contributions to the documentary art form,” says Melanie Masino. “He has
produced multiple documentaries of which his first, “Brooklyn Bridge,”
earned an Academy Award nomination in 1980. He has since acquired an array
of awards including winner in 2002 of the International Documentary
Association Career Achievement Award.” The screening of Burns’ film on Dr.
Horatio Nelson Jackson and his adventurous, cross-country drive from San
Francisco to New York in 1903 drew overflow crowds.
We are also
broadening our base, with joint screening efforts in Tulsa, Oklahoma and
Memphis, Tennessee that bring our programming to new audiences. We have
worked with EAST Lab high school students to produce a film on the heritage
and history of our hometown, Hot Springs. We have worked with the Hot
Springs Music Festival, hosting its chamber music groups in our theater. A
monthly documentary screening during the traditional Hot Springs “Gallery
Walk” of the arts community is evolving to a standard HSDFI event, and has
been well received by our local audiences.
These
monthly screenings are shown on the first Friday of each month at our
historic Malco Theater. By keeping our Theater open to the public
year-round, we hope more people will become aware of what we do, and be
encouraged to attend our annual Festivals. We screen documentaries on a wide
variety of subjects for various holidays and observances. This year we have
shown films in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Black History Month, Women’s
History Month and Spanish Heritage.
HSDFI also
takes part in other programs and events throughout the year. Earlier this
year we took outreach films to the Shepherd Center in Hot Springs, where we
held screenings for senior audiences. We send films to several schools,
local and statewide, for the students to view for educational purposes. This
program is open to all ages, kindergarten through college. We make these
screening opportunities available for those who want to experience the
documentary genrè but cannot attend our programs at our Malco Theater.
The Hot
Springs Documentary Film Institute strives to provide cultural
opportunities, entertainment, and cinematic education through the art form
of the documentary film genre`. As part of this goal, we also aim to provide
venues for new and established documentarians from across this nation and
abroad. We also provide support for community and cultural organizations,
through co-operative programming, joint educational outreach efforts, and
other diverse arts efforts.
We
are rich in purpose, vision, and friends. We are in need of greater support
to continue expanding and broadening horizons of filmmakers, students, and
the general public. While financial support is necessary, the efforts of
volunteers, Board members, and other individuals and groups who give us
unfailing encouragement with their constant support and attendance at
events, cannot be measured with the yardstick of dollars and cents. We
visualize an Institute, generously funded and endowed, with the ongoing
support of patrons and friends who have brought us to our present level. We
are moving to another plane with the continued generosity and collaboration
of our organization and others to develop broader fields, establish more
venues, and widen the scope of our present work. We have unlimited
potential. We have vision. Assist in the move forward! Join with the Hot
Springs Documentary Film Institute for a gratifying and satisfying purpose.
